إبراهيمعليه السلامIbrahim

The intimate friend of Allahخليل الله

Known in English as Abraham

He broke the idols, walked into the fire, and spoke to his father with nothing but gentleness.

يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim. Quran 21:69

His story

As a young man he looked at the stars, the moon and the sun, and watched each of them set. "I do not love things that set" 6:76-79. He turned his face to the One who created them.

His father carved idols. Ibrahim disagreed with him completely, and still every sentence begins with "O my father". When his father threatened to stone him, Ibrahim answered: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you" 19:42-47.

He broke his people's idols and left the biggest one standing, so they would ask it what happened 21:57-67. They threw him into a fire, and Allah said: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim" 21:68-69.

He left Hajar and their baby Ismail in a valley with no water. When she understood that Allah had commanded it, she said: then He will not abandon us Bukhari 3364. Later he saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his son, and both of them submitted, and the son was ransomed 37:102-107. Father and son raised the foundations of the Ka'bah together 2:127.

Allah took him as an intimate friend 4:125. On the Night Journey the Prophet ﷺ met him in the seventh heaven Bukhari 3207.

Moments

  1. 01

The stars, the moon, the sun

Ibrahim looked at the night sky. He saw a star and said: "This is my Lord?" When it set, he said: "I do not love things that set." Then the moon rose, and set. Then the sun, the biggest of all, and it set too. "My people, I am free of what you associate with Him. I have turned my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth." Faith reached by looking and thinking.

    Quran 6:74-79

  2. 02

    "O my father"

His father worshipped idols and threatened to stone him. Ibrahim answered four times with "O my father": why worship what cannot hear or see? I have received knowledge you have not, so follow me. Do not worship Shaytan. I fear a punishment will touch you. And when his father told him to leave, he said: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you."

    Quran 19:41-48

  3. 03

    The fire

He broke their idols, all except the biggest, and when they asked who did it he said: "Ask the big one, if they can speak." For a moment they saw the truth, then turned back. "Burn him," they said, "and support your gods." Allah said: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim." The fire that was meant to end him could not touch him.

    Quran 21:51-70

  4. 04

    The valley of Makkah

He left his wife Hajar and their baby Isma'il in a valley with no water and no plants, by Allah's command, near the Sacred House. He prayed: "Our Lord, I have settled some of my family in a barren valley, so that they may establish prayer. Make the hearts of people incline towards them, and provide them with fruits, so that they may be grateful." Today that valley is Makkah.

    Quran 14:37Sahih al-Bukhari 3364

  5. 05

    The dream

Ibrahim saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his son, and he told him. The boy answered: "My father, do what you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." When they both submitted and he laid him down, Allah called: "O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision." A great sacrifice was given in his son's place. The hardest command, met by a father and son together.

    Quran 37:100-111

  6. 06

    The Ka'bah

Ibrahim and Isma'il raised the foundations of the House together. As they worked, they did not ask to be remembered. They asked to be accepted: "Our Lord, accept this from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." Then they prayed for a messenger to rise from their descendants, to teach them the Book and wisdom.

    Quran 2:127-129

What he did when…

With your parents

His father threatened to stone him and told him to go away. Ibrahim disagreed with him on the biggest question there is, and still every sentence began with "O my father". He never raised his voice, and he left with: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you."

Quran 19:42-47

When you are afraid

They built a great fire and threw him into it, a whole people against one man. Ibrahim did not have an army or a way out. He had Allah, and Allah spoke to the fire itself: "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim." Their plot fell apart, and they were the losers.

Quran 21:68-69

When you stand alone

He was a young man, and the whole city worshipped idols, his own father included. He asked them simple questions they could not answer, broke their idols, and stood alone in front of the crowd that wanted to burn him. Being outnumbered never made him quieter.

Quran 21:57-67

When someone needs your help

Strangers came to his door and greeted him with peace. He did not know them, and still he went quietly to his family, came back with a fattened calf, and set it before them: "Will you not eat?" No questions first, no fuss. He gave the best he had, and only later learned they were angels.

Quran 51:24-27

When you have to leave home

When his people tried to burn him and he had to leave everything behind, Ibrahim did not say "I am running away." He said: "I am going to my Lord. He will guide me." Leaving became a journey towards someone, not away from something.

Quran 37:99

His words, for you to keep

رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Our Lord, accept this from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. Quran 2:127
