The first human and the first prophet. He made the first mistake, and he made the first repentance.
وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا
His story
Allah told the angels He was placing a successor on the earth, and they asked why, when people would cause harm and shed blood. Allah answered that He knew what they did not. Then He taught Adam the names of all things, and Adam told them to the angels, who could not 2:30-33.
The angels were told to bow to Adam, and they did, except Iblis. His reason was one sentence of pride: "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay" 7:12.
Adam and his wife lived in the Garden and were told not to approach one tree. Shaytan whispered to them, and they ate from it. What happened next is the whole lesson: they did not argue, they did not blame. They said, "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves" 7:23, and Allah accepted their repentance 2:37.
Moments
- 01
Taught the names
Allah taught Adam the names of all things, then showed them to the angels and asked them to name them. They said: "Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us." Adam named them all. Knowledge was the first honour given to a human being.
- 02
Iblis refuses
Allah commanded the angels to prostrate to Adam, and they did, all except Iblis. Asked why, he answered: "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay." The first sin in the story is not a bite of fruit. It is pride: believing you are better than someone because of what you were made from.
- 03
The slip and the return
Adam and his wife were told to live in the Garden and eat freely, only not to come near one tree. Shaytan whispered, swore he was a sincere adviser, and they slipped. They did not argue or blame. They said: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers." Adam received words from his Lord, and Allah turned to him. He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.

His two sons
Both sons offered a sacrifice. One was accepted and the other was not, and the one rejected said: "I will kill you." His brother answered: "Allah only accepts from those who are mindful of Him. If you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out mine to kill you" 5:28. He killed him anyway, and then did not even know how to hide his brother's body until Allah sent a crow scratching the ground. "Woe to me," he said, "am I not even able to be like this crow?" He became one of the regretful.
What he did when…
Adam did not explain, justify or blame. He and his wife said together: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers." The first mistake a human made ended with the first repentance, and Allah accepted it.
Adam and Iblis both disobeyed. The difference between them is what came next. Iblis argued: "I am better than him, You created me from fire." Adam admitted: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves." One held on to his pride and was lost. The other let go of it and was forgiven.
Two brothers offered a sacrifice. Allah accepted one and not the other, and instead of asking why, the rejected brother turned on the accepted one. The wronged brother refused to raise his hand back. Jealousy became murder, and murder became a man digging in the dirt, ashamed that a crow knew more than he did. Regret came, but too late.
His words, for you to keep
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
If your child carries this name
آدم Adam
A child named Adam carries the name of every human being. Teach him that falling is human, and that coming back quickly is what makes a person great.
