Allah counts marriage among His signs: He made spouses for you so that you find rest in them, and He put love and mercy between you 30:21. Both of them. Some days love carries a home, and some days only mercy does.
From the Quran
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً
From the Prophet ﷺ
«خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِي»
Seen in the prophets
Travelling with his family through the desert night, Musa saw a fire far away. He told them to wait, and went alone, hoping to bring back news or a burning brand "so that you may warm yourselves" 28:29. He walked into the unknown for their warmth.
Allah answered Zakariya, gave him Yahya, and set his wife right for him. Then the Quran speaks of the two of them together: "they used to hurry to good deeds" 21:90. A husband and wife, hurrying to good side by side.
'A'ishah said she was never as jealous of any woman as of Khadijah, who had died before she ever saw her, because he ﷺ spoke of her so often, and kept sending meat to her friends years later Bukhari 3818. Love that outlived the marriage.
What it is not
Marriage is not ownership. Allah says: they are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them 2:187. A garment covers, warms and protects, and here it goes both ways.
Today, in practice
Say thank you for the ordinary things: the meal, the bills, the school run.
Never correct your spouse in front of other people.
Put the phone down at the table, and ask about their day.
