الأَمَانَةTrustworthinessal-amāna

Whatever is placed in your hands stays safe: things, secrets, work, people.

الأَمَانَة

In Surah ash-Shu'ara, messenger after messenger introduces himself with the same words: "I am a trustworthy messenger to you." And the Prophet ﷺ said that when trust is lost, the Hour is near Bukhari 59.

From the Quran

إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الْأَمَانَاتِ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهَا

Allah commands you to return trusts to those they belong to. Quran 4:58

From the Prophet ﷺ

«فَإِذَا ضُيِّعَتِ الأَمَانَةُ فَانْتَظِرِ السَّاعَةَ»

When trust is lost, then wait for the Hour. Sahih al-Bukhari 59

Seen in the prophets

موسىMusa

After seeing him at the well, a young woman of Madyan told her father: "The best one to hire is the strong, the trustworthy" 28:26. Strength alone was not enough.

Quran 28:26

يوسفYusuf

The king of Egypt spoke with Yusuf and said: "Today you are with us, established and trusted" 12:54. Yusuf asked to look after the storehouses: "I am a careful keeper, and I know" 12:55.

Quran 12:54-55

What it is not

Amanah is not only money. A secret is a trust. The hours you are paid for are a trust. A position is a trust too: the Prophet ﷺ said trust is lost when matters are handed to people not fit for them Bukhari 59.

Today, in practice

  1. Keep the secret, even after the friendship ends.

  2. Work the hours you are paid for, even when nobody checks.

  3. Return the borrowed charger, book or dish the same day.

Small, practical steps. This is friendly advice, not a ruling.
