The Quran places it right after worshipping Allah alone 17:23, and then it gets very specific: not even "uff", the smallest sound of annoyance.
From the Quran
فَلَا تَقُلْ لَهُمَا أُفٍّ وَلَا تَنْهَرْهُمَا وَقُلْ لَهُمَا قَوْلًا كَرِيمًا
From the Prophet ﷺ
«مَنْ أَحَقُّ بِحُسْنِ صَحَابَتِي» … «أُمُّكَ» … «ثُمَّ أَبُوكَ»
Seen in the prophets
Allah praises Yahya as "dutiful to his parents, and he was not arrogant or disobedient" 19:14. Of everything that could be said about a prophet, this is what was chosen.
The baby 'Isa, speaking from the cradle, said Allah had made him "dutiful to my mother, and He did not make me arrogant or wretched" 19:32.
Ibrahim's father threatened him and sent him away. Ibrahim answered: "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you" 19:47. He disagreed with his father completely, and stayed gentle.
What it is not
Honouring them does not mean obeying them against Allah. Even if they strive to make you worship others besides Him, "do not obey them, and still keep them company in this world with kindness" 31:15. Ibrahim refused his father's idols and still called him "O my father" 19:42-47.
Today, in practice
Call them before they have to call you.
Put your phone face down while they are talking to you.
Lower your voice by one level in every disagreement with them.
Small, practical steps. This is friendly advice, not a ruling.
