AkhlaqThe self

الصَّبْرPatienceaṣ-ṣabr

Holding steady when life hits you, and not letting go of Allah.

الصَّبْر

Allah says He is with the patient 2:153. And the Prophet ﷺ taught when patience counts the most: at the first blow Bukhari 1302. Not a week later, when the shock has already passed.

From the Quran

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Allah is with the patient. Quran 2:153

From the Prophet ﷺ

«الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى»

Patience is at the first blow. Sahih al-Bukhari 1302

Seen in the prophets

أيوبAyyub

Ayyub was tested with harm for a long time, and called on his Lord: "Harm has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful" 21:83. Allah's verdict on him: "We found him patient. What an excellent servant!" 38:44

Quran 21:83Quran 38:44

يعقوبYa'qub

When his sons came home with Yusuf's shirt stained with false blood, Ya'qub said: "So patience is beautiful" 12:18. Sabrun jamil: a beautiful patience.

Quran 12:18

What it is not

Patience is not pretending you feel nothing. Ya'qub said: "I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah" 12:86. And when his little son Ibrahim was dying, the Prophet ﷺ wept and said: the eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, but we only say what pleases our Lord Bukhari 1303.

Today, in practice

  1. When bad news comes, say "inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un" before anything else 2:156.

  2. In a queue or in traffic, fill the wait with dhikr instead of complaints.

  3. When a plan fails, give it one more honest try before you give up.

Small, practical steps. This is friendly advice, not a ruling.
