الحِلْمForbearanceal-ḥilm

Feeling the anger, and staying in charge of it.

الحِلْم

Hilm is the calm of someone who could react, and chooses not to. Allah called Ibrahim halim, and gave him the good news of a halim son 37:101.

From the Quran

وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

Those who hold back their anger and pardon people. And Allah loves those who do good. Quran 3:134

From the Prophet ﷺ

«لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ، إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ»

The strong one is not the one who wrestles people down. The strong one is the one who controls himself when he is angry. Sahih al-Bukhari 6114

Seen in the prophets

موسىMusa

Musa's anger was real: when he saw the golden calf, he threw down the tablets 7:150. Then the Quran says: "when the anger left Musa, he took up the tablets" 7:154. Even a prophet's anger passes, and he picked up what he had dropped.

What it is not

Hilm is not never feeling angry. Musa felt it 7:150. It is not letting anger choose your words for you.

Today, in practice

  1. Wait ten minutes before you send it. Then read it again.

  2. When you are angry, lower your voice instead of raising it.

  3. If anger comes while you are standing, sit down Abu Dawud 4782.

Small, practical steps. This is friendly advice, not a ruling.
