Allah tells His Messenger ﷺ why people stayed close to him: "It is by mercy from Allah that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have scattered from around you" 3:159.
From the Quran
From the Prophet ﷺ
Seen in the prophets
A bedouin urinated in the mosque, and people jumped up at him. He ﷺ said: "Don't interrupt him." Then he called for a bucket of water and had it poured over the place Bukhari 6025. The man was spared, and the mosque was cleaned.
Standing over the brothers who had thrown him into a well, with all the power on his side, Yusuf said: "No blame on you today. May Allah forgive you" 12:92.
What it is not
Gentleness is not weakness, and it does not mean letting wrong pass. In the mosque, the floor was still cleaned Bukhari 6025. Rifq is firmness without harshness.
Today, in practice
Correct people in private, never in front of others.
Be patient with someone who is learning: the new colleague, the new Muslim, your father with his phone.
Hold the door and wait, even when you are in a hurry.
Small, practical steps. This is friendly advice, not a ruling.
