The Prophet ﷺ named breaking a promise as one of the three signs of a hypocrite Bukhari 33. Today we promise with a thumbs-up and forget by the evening.
From the Quran
وَأَوْفُوا بِالْعَهْدِ ۖ إِنَّ الْعَهْدَ كَانَ مَسْئُولًا
From the Prophet ﷺ
«آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلاَثٌ إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ»
Seen in the prophets
Of all his qualities, the Quran chose this one for Isma'il: "He was true to his promise" 19:54.
Ibrahim is remembered with a single word: "Ibrahim, who fulfilled" 53:37.
Musa agreed to work eight or ten years in Madyan for his marriage 28:27-28. Ibn 'Abbas was asked which of the two he completed: "The longer and the better of them" Bukhari 2684.
What it is not
Keeping your word is not promising less so you never fail. It is promising carefully, saying "in sha Allah" 18:23-24, and then doing everything you can.
Today, in practice
If you said "I'll call you back", call back.
Be on time. Their time is a trust too.
Pay back what you borrowed before they have to ask.
Small, practical steps. This is friendly advice, not a ruling.
